Mean Machine RFC got relegated from Kenya Cup at the end of the 2016-17 season. Their resilience has brought them back to the premier competition. But just before jumping into the even deeper end, the team understood the reason for pre-season competition & honored the Floodies 2018 Varsity Category invite. After beating Strathmore Uni 65-5 in the Quarters & CUEA Monks 34-22 in the Semis, the team has booked a date with USIU at 1500 hrs this Saturday 27th October 2018 at the Impala Club. What does newly elected Chairman – Odipo Siwa have to say?
“When we got relegated from the Kenya Cup, an atmosphere of ineptness engulfed us at the beginning. The fear that we would lose players to teams playing at Kenya Cup was magnified like never before because not many players fancy not playing in venues which are least spoken about. Playing in the Championship was very interesting. At least at Kenya Cup, we had some prior knowledge of how teams play and we could find a way to corner them. The Championship atmosphere was full of uncertainties, especially on Thursdays during the team naming ceremony. We were unsure of playing surfaces & even travelled to venues Machine has never played in. There was also this constant fear of ‘what if we never make it out of this?”. But we stuck within the structure and came out of it.”
“For the past 2 weekends the team has played in the 37th edition of the Impala Rugby Floodlit Tournament, we’ve been able to test our systems. Pre-season preparations are only complete when you meet teams and play against them within a competitive structure. We’ve been able to identify players who need more instructing. We’ve also been able to see structures that work and those that don’t.”
“USIU are a good side. We met them at the Championship and lost 17-15 against them in their backyard. When they came to the UoN, we narrowly won. This weekend, we want to set the record straight with them. Machine should be the best Varsity team in Kenya. I am happy that team captain – Shadon Munoko has been very influential in the team’s Floodies 2018 campaign. I am elated that fullback Eric Muthama is also back to playing. If we lose this match, it means we are not ready for the task ahead & it will be a huge eye opener to re-engineering our systems before Kenya Cup starts. If we win, it will be a huge morale booster. There never exist losses at Floodies, just lessons,” he concludes
