University side BlakBlad didn’t pose an equal match to Impala Saracens firepower today. In as much as the students went over once to register 7 points, they were not going to recover from the barrage of tries Impala had in line.
Duncan Ekasi set the pace for the match after a series of slow ball play. His 2nd Minute try registered a 5-0 score, thanks to George Okowa’s inaccuracy at the posts. BlakBlad waited 4 minutes later. A box kick from Tichi, BlakBlad’s best half back, caught QuintoOngo unprepared. Blad’s Klein Ongaki favored by the bounce, sprinted all the way to touching down. His corner flag try was immaculately converted by Tichi, yielding a 2 point gap between the two teams.
You must admire Pius Shiundu’s hunger for scoring, his 9th minute prance through defence saw him register his first try of the game. Okowa’s boot looked much unpolished. He missed this conversion too. His kicking however showed signs of resurrection when he got 3 points to his name; a penalty deep in Blad half that sent the board reading 13-7 Impala. The 35th minute was crowned by a try off the forwards. A try borne out of hard work by the longest serving Gazelle in the pack; Paul Oimbo. We expected Okowa to top it up with the extras, but he chose to blow it away. 4 minutes after Oimbo’s masterpiece, Oliech weaved a pop to Shiundu who drew 2 defenders before releasing Ongo. So timely was the pass that all Ongo needed to do was pin back his ears and dive into the box! Shiundu’s attempt at getting the ball over the posts went unsuccessful. Halftime: Impala Saracens 23-7 BlakBlad RC
The remaining 40 minutes were filled with color and frequent visits to the Blad Try Box. Shiundu’s 43rd minute try, Omer’s 49th and Onsomu’s 53rd constantly kept Impala fans in cheer. Pius converted his own &Oliech’s percentage was at a sure 100% for the other two.
More was yet to come. Oliech went over after a clever offload by Nyandigisi in the 58th minute. Shiundu missed the extras. Nyandigisi came back to shred Blad’s backs in the 63rd. Oliech’s boot didn’t falter. Oimbo proved his fitness once more when he barged over in the 65th minute. Oliech missed the post by inches on the conversion for a 61-7 register. Onsomu came alive in the 70th minute, goose stepping, side stepping, and keeping Blad’sdefence busy before pressing the trigger to release the hat trick hero Pius Shiundu. Oliech’s successful conversion closed the match for a massive 68-7 win!
