Olympic High School have for the second time in a row won the Standard Chartered Impala Saracens Rugby Academy Ladies’ tournament trophy. The team which has been training together for the past 8 months has come out stronger than any other within Nairobi. They have proved that they can beat any other team in a final. In the last tournament played on February 22nd 2015, they ran over SilverSprings. A 10-5 unimpressive score that got Coach Diana Awino getting back to restructure. This tournament edition was obviously going to feel different. They sunk in 17 unanswered points to a hapless Maono Educational Centre who appeared content with a Main Cup final appearance. Their journey to lifting the trophy was characterized by an unbeaten run. There is also no doubt as to why they produced the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament – Quinter Achieng.
Other winners…
Plate – Silver Springs
After putting up a spirited fight against Olympic in the previous version, Silver Springs slumped to the plate. They didn’t drop a head anyway as they went ahead to beat an obstinate Hidden talent 17-7 to take home the Plate.
Bowl – Eutycus
They were not going to let New Langata run away with the bowl. After finding themselves trailing in the 1st half, much effort was required by the girls from Satellite to get back to the game. It is only until the last 3 dying minutes of the second half that they managed to run over the chalk, not only once, but thrice, converting one to close the match at 17-7
The quarterly tournament, which brought together 8 teams & was organized by the Standard Chartered Impala Saracens Rugby Academy also saw 41 skillful girls get admitted to the core Academy. Key focus for the academy this year will be improving life skills & the level of girls’ rugby in Africa.
