BILL GITHINJI: Academy training teaches more than rugby
Bill Githinji

Bill Githinji, former Kenya international & coach notes, with confidence, that enrolling their child in an academy system is the best decision a parent can make. Read on to understand why…

An academy system is about process. For anything to become great & to last the test of time, its creation has to be taken through evaluative processes. That is how you end up with a product that is reliable & will serve you best. We have been working on perfecting our Academy process for the past 10 years & are seeking to open it up now for specialized skill development which will prove to be value for money both in the present and the future.
I have played and coached at the Kenya National Team level & to date you can notice that players who have been through developmental training in their early years know how to properly catch & pass a rugby ball. Those who started playing the sport in their late teens are always struggling to master this basic skill. Catching and passing cannot be easily taught after a player has reached a certain age. You require hours to build this simple technique. If a child learns how to catch and pass in their early years, they ultimately build confidence within themselves to shoot for distance and accuracy. Some even begin improvising on unique pass styles that can prove to be game-changing moves in hotly contested matches.
An academy system does not focus on the sport only. It also teaches them honesty, discipline and work rate. These qualities can be seen spreading into other aspects of their life. We have players who have gone through our Academy system & aced their school exams. Some have gone the extra mile and earned Masters degrees. We have also seen them go as far as giving back to their communities & supporting their parents. I understand that Kenyan rugby at the moment lives on semi-professional status. The advantage that the Impala Alpha Academy provides, apart from the educative fun is the pool from which outstanding players can get spotted by talent scouts & ultimately earn international study scholarships. Who knows? Your child could become the next rugby superstar. The discipline, honestly & hard-work qualities instilled in them while they attend the Alpha Academy could give them the much needed edge in the near future. By bringing them to the Impala Alpha Academy Open Day on 15th June 2019 at the Impala Club from 8 am to 12 noon, you will have set them on a path of future success.
