Stephen Odhiambo, the BlakBlad chairman who also doubles up as player confirmed his team’s participation in Floodies 2017. In confirming his team’s participation, Odhiambo was particular on why they have chosen to take part in the competition this year, “I doubt there could be any other rugby tournament in the region with such competition just before resumption of the Kenya Cup & ESS leagues.” “It has been many months since we actively took part in fifteens rugby. Most of our players who didn’t make it to our sevens squad need to be tested on match fitness. This tournament also serves to spark wakefulness in our players just before we take on the rest of the fifteens leagues. A couple of our players have been called up to try for Kenya 7s, but that should not affect us. We have always prioritized on depth. We are not involved in transfer discussions with anyone at the moment. There are always new students joining the University & we have proven to be very good at polishing their skills for top-flight contest,” he adds.
BlakBlad last year played to a 16-24 loss to Floodies debutants Menengai Oilers in the finals. Although Menengai Oilers have grown to become the fans’ favourite, Odhiambo believes Blad have targets on sight, “Our loss to Menengai Oilers in the Varsities final last year is motivation enough to come back, play & beat them. We are looking at nothing but lifting the Floodies 2017 Varsities trophy.”
