Simon Odongo, Team Manager Menengai Cream Homeboyz on a phone interview with us this morning revealed why his team has been a regular at Floodies, “Floodies has a rich history. This is where XV competition gets electrifying. The knock-out aspect to it is a component to an atmosphere that brings out the best out of players – and we love it. It is a good opportunity to judge ourselves just before start of the season. A look at the teams playing in the clubs contest is enough statement to tell you that this is no joke: KCB, SportPesa Quins & Resolution Impala Saracens are pedigree teams.”
We asked him if he was in any way ‘petrified’ to be facing SportPesa Quins in their quarter final fixture to be played on 4th November at 7pm. His response was full of optimism, “We can never be petrified. We are indeed very happy that our first match of the 2017-18 Kenya Cup is against SportPesa Quins. We are glad that Floodies 2017 provides an opportunity for us to know them well before the Kenya Cup league opener on the 25th.”
The transfer period has been an opportunity for clubs to fortify themselves before the 2017/18 and Homeboyz have taken great advantage of this time to strengthen themselves. “So far, we have signed 3 players from Resolution Impala Saracens: Mohammed Omollo, Kevin Ochami & Israel Soi. We also have Patrick Yugi & Churchill Ooko from Strathmore. We however lost Andrew Chogo to Kabras but gained Okaron Oscar’s indefatigable services,” he confirms.
Menengai Cream Homeboyz are a bruised team. If it helps explain the depth of the bruise, Kabras Sugar RFC beat them at the Kenya Cup Semis in a match that went to extra time. To add to the above, they have never won a Floodies trophy. Odongo intimates on what to expect this year, “At Homeboyz, we have a culture of desiring to do better than our last performance. We always got beaten in the past but in 2016, we managed to win the Plate in a final played against Strathmore. Our players are up to the task. Our pre-season preparations have been going on well. We’ll definitely want to start the XV season with the best result at Floodies 2017.”
Could this be the year we watch the Deejayz lift the Floodies 2017 trophy? Make sure you are present at the Impala Club on 4th November 2017 at 7pm when they go face to face with SportPesa Quins.
