Homeboyz Rugby are famous for winning 4 out of six 2018 National Sevens Circuit Legs and emerging 2018 NSC overall winners. The team’s grit came alive on the last leg of the circuit at the RFUEA when they levelled to push their final match against hosts Kenya Harlequins to sudden death. Leonard Mugaisi kicked, collected and scored for the 24-19 win. This confirmed the 4th 2018 NSC trophy for the Deejays. Although Homeboyz have been extremely electric with the shorter version of the sport this year, the only notable trophy they have collected in 2018 is the Enterprise Cup. The Kenya Cup and Impala Rugby Floodlit Tournament Rolls Of Honor don’t carry the team’s name.
Speaking to the Floodies 2018 Media office, Team Manager Simon Odongo confirmed, “In 2016, we took home the Plate, in 2017, we emerged 3rd. For us, it is about performing better than the previous year. We are now in our 3rd month of pre-season training and going by the mood in training, the boys look very eager to claim the Floodies 2018 trophy. Our stellar performance in the 7s circuit is because we embraced the challenge of big teams at the pool stage. To be the best, you always have to spar with the best and that is why I would fancy meeting the two Floodies 2017 finalists in our first match.”
Head Coach Paul Murunga, a former Kenya international, relived his playing days at Floodies, “Those days, the playing surface was not as exciting to play on as it is nowadays. The improved playing surface goes a long way into helping reduce instances of injuries, especially now that the recovery period between Floodies and Kenya Cup is small. The stands were filled with students. An electric atmosphere!”
Asked if the team will be unveiling new signings on the 13th of October 2018, he replied, “The fans could see a return of Henry Ayah from Nakuru RFC. Ayah played in our under 19 team before going to Nakuru. If pen is put on paper next week, you could also see a return of one of our renown wingers.” “8 Homeboyz Rugby players are engaged with the Kenya Simbas for Repechage 2018 preparations. 7 more are engaged with the Kenya 7s, but this opens up opportunity for more of our young players to claim spots within the Kenya Cup squad,” he concludes.
