After a rather ‘interesting’ 7s National Sevens Circuit, where his charges played in 4 Challenge Trophy Competitions & an appearance at the Main Cup Semis at Christie 7s, Strathmore Leos Head Coach – John Mbai is upbeat ahead of the 37th edition of the Impala Rugby Floodlit Tournament which is sponsored by BLAZE.
“This past 7s season did not look up,” he starts. “15s is a different affair. Last year when we lost to Mean Machine in our first Floodies match, it opened our eyes to the areas that required fixing. When we played in the Plate Final against Kenya Harlequins, the unlucky 20-25 loss was testament to our quick learning abilities,” he confirms. Floodies presented us the best opportunity to gauge ourselves much earlier in the season. The efforts placed to finishing 6th at the 2017-18 Kenya Cup go back to us noticing what required panel beating at an early stage. This year, we want to do better. We want to meet the strongest team. To be exact, I hope that the draw places us against KCB, Kabras or any other 2017-18 Kenya Cup semi finalist in our first match. This would be a good opportunity to effectively gauge our pre-season preparations. We have been recruiting players from high schools, but don’t be shocked to see exciting signings by close of this transfer season,”
