The Standard Chartered Impala U18 Girls team today won the International French Schools Rugby Tournament played at the Impala Club.
The team, coached by Mary Otieno, who has vast experience in international rugby as a player and instructor had almost no opposition from visiting sides.
‘Our defence system worked to it’s billing. No one scored a try against us’, asserts Mary who had been instrumental in preparing the side for this invitational tournament.
On Monday 3rd April 2017, Standard Chartered sponsored team walloped Nairobi based French School Lycée Denis Diderot II 30-0. Lycée Gustave Eiffel Mozambique was next on the chopping board, receiving a 20-0 beating under the hands of the Impala girls.
Wednesday 5th April 2017 was filled with three wins out of three matches played: The girls worked hard to beat Lycée Jules Verne Johannesburg 5-0, dug deep to beat Lycée Francais De Tananarive Madagascar by a solitary try and drilled two tries to win 10-0 over Lycée Denis Diderot I.
The team was comfortable with a one-try win over Lycée Pierre Mendes France Tunisie in the semis. They went on to run two unanswered tries & won 10-0 against islanders – Lycée Georges Brasses Reunion.
The Standard Chartered Impala Rugby Academy currently boasts of having more than 1,000 junior players in it’s fold, 45% of which are girls. In as much as the Academy seeks to seed rugby skills into the young, it also seeks to actively champion social change within the communities that these children live in.
