Impala Saracens Academy won the Mwamba Cup Division II title at the weekend, defeating MKU Thika 20-17 in an entertaining match at RFUEA Grounds.
What the side lacks in age, it certainly makes up in pace and talent as the Ian Mabwa led side defeated a much more experienced MKU Thika side on Saturday.
The academy side’s success follows Impala Saracens Resolution’s (the club’s second team) Eric Shirley Shield win last month, the first in 15 years for the club.
Five Impala Saracens Resolution players were also called-up to represent the Kenyan national team last week, showing the strength in depth existing in the club’s ranks at the moment.
After a fairly disappointing year thus far from the first team, Saracens will be hoping that the success of their more youthful sides can propel them to senior team success in the near future and challenge a KCB side who on Saturday added to their Kenya Cup success by winning the Enterprise Cup.
With the abundance of raw talent available at Impala Saracens, it will be interesting to see how some of Kenya’s hottest prospects such as Erick Kerre or Robert Aringo develop in the next couple of years as Saracens look to win a league title for the first time since 2009.
