In Unusual Waters: Why they chose 7s
Impala Saracens Training-11

Resolution Impala Saracens is only 2 weeks away from opening it’s 2017 National Sevens Circuit Campaign. It is entirely normal to see players known to be fifteens aficionados & not involved with the national team take the 3 month break & engage in rest. Some use this opportunity to take a well deserved rest from the 7 - month long fifteens season. These 3 forwards however, have been spending the past 71 days doing the opposite. Here they share with us why they have been waking up early in the morning & going back home late every Monday to Thursday for the past 8 and a half weeks

I am training because I still have a lot to give back to the team. In as much as I am much older than the rest, I still believe I have a lot more to offer. 2 or 3 legs of the 2017 7s Circuit will be very good a reward to myself.

I love competition & want to instil the spirit of competition to the younger players in this team. I always show up to play, compete & if they beat me only then will I take a rest.

I am using sevens as a means to regain fitness. It is also only right that I give back to the club by playing this version of the game at this point in time. The transition from fifteens to sevens has not been easy especially with the strength & conditioning aspect having been stepped up. Competition is also tough within the 28 players in here, but I am very optimistic of inclusion into the final 21. Once in the final 21, I am looking forward to playing some good rugby.

Rainer Omondi (lock):

I was challenged by the coaches to play 7s this year and I took it up. Last year I never made it to the final 7s team. This year I want to make it to the final squad, probably play a leg & build my experience in this shorter, more intense version. The journey over the past 65 days has not been easy though, I am happy with the progress I have made in physical fitness but I still acknowledge the need to work on post-injury confidence.
