Quinto Ongo would capitalize on Homeboyz infringement in the 9th minute. His success at splitting the posts opened a 3-0 lead for the Resolution Insurance sponsored side.
The lead wouldn’t last longer than 2 minutes. Alvin Otieno’s prance would release Jeff Okwacha to the try box. Okwacha’s try neatly garnished by Kelvin Masai sent the board reading 7-3 Homeboyz at the 11th minute.
Winger Cyprian Kuto would then open up Gazelle defence, setting the launch pad for attack. His being stopped just inches from the edge of the box would however not dim the Deejayz’ offence. Collins Shikoli would find gap in defence and run through, dotting between the posts. Masai’s boot stretched Impala’s trail to 11 points.
A couple of phases machinated by Impala’s forward – backline interplay would reshuffle Homeboyz defence. A mismatch created found Sidindi Akoth cutting through Homeboyz forwards in the 25th minute. Ongo complemented him cutting the point deficit to only 4 points.
Homeboyz’ Michael Wanjala would come off the bench to score but Masai missed the twos. Ekasi would reply by barging over at the 32nd but Ongo’s attempt at the top-up went short. Both teams would capitalize on each other’s indiscipline thereafter. Masai would boot over one in the 36th minute. Ongo drilled one through in the 39th minute closing the half at 22-18. Homeboyz were looking the sure winner at this time.
Homeboyz’ forward Rhone Mudamba scored in the 41st minute. Masai failed to convert. Ekasi would register his name on the sheet again in the 51st minute. Ongo converted with ease. Nyandigisi would chip-collect and dive at the corner in the 55th minute. Ongo’s low and hard boot cleaved the posts. Nato would score after side-stepping Alvin Otieno. Okowa booted neatly for a 39-27 Impala lead. The Deejayz were now trailing. Okowa added 3 points at the 62nd, the scoreboard read 42-27.
With Muniafu and Ndome getting binned, it was going to be interesting to watch the remainder of the steaming match. Philip Ikambili’s two tries and Masai’s success at converting one within the last 10 minutes threatened to reignite the Deejayz’ beat. The 39-42 trail to Impala could have been overturned, but poor handling by Homeboyz within kill zone & resolute defending by Impala closed the game with the Gazelles posting 4 consecutive unbeaten results this season.
