KCB clinched their fourth Impala Floodlit title, running out with a convincing 30-3 title defense against Lunch Bar Quins in the final played under the lights at the Impala Club on Saturday 25 October 2014.
It was Quins who showed all the early intent, forcing the defending champions into early infringements, Isaac Adimo miss two penalty attempts within the opening five minutes and the challengers eventually fell behind through Essau Otieno’s penalty which put the bankers 3-0 up after ten minutes of play.
These three points seemed to spark the life into KCB as they put Quins on the back foot, albeit momentarily.
Quins were still in the game, dominating this spell of possession and gaining territory. Winger Paul Abuto would latch onto a perfected weighted pop pass from Adimo, receiving the ball on the burst and breaching the KCB defense to gain a critical twenty or so meters but Dennis Muhanji out wide was unable to field the ensuing pass with the KCB try line within sight.
This match would remain close, the bankers dealt a blow when captain Curtis Lilako sustaining a knock that hampered his mobility and effectiveness as Quins had the upper hand during this spell of the match.
KCB would eventually double their lead with Otieno’s penalty on the stroke of half time giving them a 6-0 lead heading into the breather.
Quins would start the second half dominating all the possession, eventually halving the scores when Adimo slotted home a drop goal three minutes into the second half Kevin Keegan would miss a goal attempt five minutes later as the Ngong Road looked ominous, seemingly choking the bankers into submission but things would soon change, KCB, who now threw on Oscar Simiyu to replace the struggling Lilako emerging unscathed from a torrid spell, managing to claw their way back into possession.
Their pressure paid off when referee Constant Cap awarded them a penalty try on fifty five minutes, Otieno converting to extend their lead to 13-3. Cap would also send Quins scrum half Godfrey Okoth to the sin bin, reducing the 1990,1997 and 1998 champions to fourteen men for a ten minute period.
KCB would throw on Andrew Amonde and Jacob Ojee for Brian Sagara and Mike Omondi respectively with Quins introducing Brian Maina, Stephan Ottou and Nzioka Kioko for William Mawira, Leroy Anyembe and Dennis Omusula respectively.
Allan Omuka would score against his former club, Otieno missing the conversion as the bankers went 18-3 up after sixty minutes of play and when Collins Wanjala landed nine minutes later, the 23-3 score line looked to have knocked the wind out of Quins sails.
Ojee would touch down at the death, Otieno converting to cap a convincing title defense for KCB.
