Samson Onsomu has taken over from Duncan Ekasi in the overall club captaincy role at Resolution Impala Saracens.
Onsomu who is 25 years old & has been at Impala ever since he was 15 has taken over the torch from Duncan Ekasi who has diligently served the club since he joined in 2004. Ekasi’s leadership started with him captaining the Impala Rugby Club under 21 team in his formative years at the club. In 2008, he was offered a chance to become match day captain against Nakuru RFC. He officially became club captain in 2011 & stayed in this position of leadership until start of the 2017-18 season. While he was captain, Ekasi played in both the shorter & longer versions of the game. He also played in the highly respected Kenya Simbas team.
Speaking to our media team, Ekasi confirmed confidence in Onsomu, “He is a club man. He has the club at heart. Onsomu’s captaincy begins at a time when he has a great team of players to lead. He has gathered enough experience to lead and I believe he is the right man for the job.”
Resolution Impala Saracens Director of Rugby, Mr. Fred Ollows in a separate interview with our media team echoed Ekasi’s sentiments, “What I would like to say about Onsomu is he is a very good leader. He leads from the front, plays good rugby & the players listen to him. We hope that he will be able to deliver results.”
Oscar Osir, a sevens legend & now Resolution Impala Saracens Backs Coach had this to say, “Ekasi’s standards are all out there for people to see. Onsomu has been at Impala since the days he used to play at the Academy. He’s been here long enough to understand what the club needs. Onsomu has also been a pivotal part of the Kenya Simbas this past season. We are happy to have him as skipper particularly because he plays in a position that is very critical in decision making.”
Samson Onsomu, who has just won Player Of The Year Awards by Odd Shaped Balls Kenya confirmed, “I don’t believe there is pressure at the moment. I have been assisting Duncan for the past 2 seasons. It will therefore be fairly easy picking from where he left. My target is to see Impala win Kenya Cup. Challenges will always be there. My job now is linking the club management & players. Duncan too had his challenges but these are must haves in any team set up.”
We wish Samson the very best in his new role!
