Resolution Impala Saracens Gazelles had to wait until the 21st minute to register a score against a very obstinate Strathmore Leos side. Although Samson Onsomu grounded the ball at the far left corner, his efforts were not complemented by Quinto Ongo who kicked the ball wide on an attempted conversion. Strathmore replied in the 26th minute. The try – borne off fast forward & backline play by the students could easily win the play of the week award. Fanuel Oduda walked into the try box. The conversion attempt by Matoka Matoka went wide.
HT: Resolution Impala Saracens 5-5 Strathmore Leos
The Gazelles found themselves trailing at the 46th minute when Elton Isiaho breached Impala defence before landing a try. Attempts by Matoko to convert went begging. This was the last time Strathmore saw the Impala try box. Quinto Ongo kicked over penalty at the 51st minute to narrow the trail to only 2 points. Onsomu scored his brace at the 60th. Ongo’s conversion attempt his the left post. Ongo’s boot went a second time unlucky when he hit the same post after Vincent Mose completed a mix of heavy aggressive play by Tyson Okoth & clever passing by Davis Makori in the 65th minute. Impala substitute lock – Kevin Okeyo proved a worthy decision. His ball carrying ability provided Impala the best of platform to attack from. It was not long before exhaustion crept up in the opponents defending. Paul Mutsami surprised them with lightning speed picking off ruck. Samson Onsomu was available for the offload. Although Onsomu crashed only inches away from the try-line, Xavier Kipng’etich had already arrived at the crash scene. In a split second, he whipped it out to Derrick Mayar who had 3 more players to pass out to wide. On a second glance at who was approaching to defend from his right, Mayar opted to tear through them, scoring the bonus point try that propelled Impala to 3rd on the Kenya Cup log. Quinto’s attempt at adding the extras flew wide.
