A big improvement from the Prinsloo 7s Challenge Cup was recorded yesterday by Resolution Impala Saracens when the team beat every opponent enroute to the Main Cup Finals. The Resolution Impala Saracens fraternity would have expected to come back to Nairobi with the trophy, but lady luck smiled the other way.
A try from Johnstone Muhanji, converted by Brian Tanga placed the sugarmen ahead but a break by Samson Onsomu released Mark Kwemoi who ran 40 metres to score under the posts. Kwemoi converted to level proceedings, but this would be the first & last time the Gazelles scored in this tension filled match.
While Impala created chances to score & failed to execute when it was needed most, Kabras were clinical & took advantage of Impala mistakes to increase the points difference.
Kabras’ Dominic Osino capitalized on Impala error at kick off to score at the corner. Tanga attempted to convert but kicked it wide. Fidel Oloo later went over under the posts. Osino converted for a 7-19 scoreline. Impala could have scored one more try through pocket rocket – Ian Mabwa, but the Kabras defence proved keen on not allowing porosity. Malik Habil’s yellow card that reduced the sugarmen to six punched no weakness in Kabras defence. After Impala mishandled the ball & offered Kabras possession, Felix Ayange dived into the box at the hooter. His attempt at converting was successful, closing the match at 7-26 in his team’s favour.
All was not lost for Impala. Mark Kwemoi, a graduate of the Standard Chartered Impala Saracens Rugby Academy emerged top points scorer. Samson Onsomu & Samuel Motari’s efforts were also lauded. They have been included in the Sepetuka 7s team of the tournament which also includes: Anduvati (Oilers), Odundo (Bulls), Sikuta (Kabras), Tanga (Kabras) & Oluoch (Homeboyz).
Resolution Impala Saracens will now focus on Christie 7s to be played on the 14th & 15th of October 2017 at the RFUEA
